Each year, there is a full two week programme of visits and activities for schools with authors and illustrators, many of national and international renown. Authors and illustrators visit schools, or library services bring schools into the libraries so the children get an opportunity to take part in an interactive session, and, for some, it will be the first time they have visited a library. By bringing schools into libraries, it means that library staff can make sure it is the first visit of many.

Over the last 32 years, hundreds of schools across the North East have taken part in NCBF. Some schools are new to NCBF each year and others have taken part for as long as staff can remember! In 2015 over 15,000 children aged 3 – 17 took part in 142 school sessions during the two week school programme, in schools across the region from Northumberland to Darlington.
